Trump Leaves G-7 Early Amid Talk of US Joining Strike on Iran's Nuclear Site
President Trump suddenly left the G-7 summit, fueling talk that the US may help Israel hit Iran’s underground nuclear site. Some of his supporters are upset, saying he’s going against his “America First” promise and risking a new war.
Washington, TOI Correspondent:
US President Donald Trump made a sudden exit from the G-7 summit in Calgary on Monday evening, citing urgent security matters in the Middle East. His early departure disrupted a scheduled meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had just arrived as Trump was leaving.Trump stayed at the summit for less than a day. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that while some progress had been made, Trump had to return to the US due to rising tensions in the Middle East. “He will leave tonight after dinner with other leaders,” she said.
Right before leaving, Trump posted a message urging people to “evacuate Teheran immediately.” He also criticized Iran for not agreeing to a deal he had pushed for. "Iran must not get a nuclear weapon,” he warned, repeating a stance he has made many times.
Once back in Washington D.C., Trump was set to go straight into a meeting with the National Security Council. There’s widespread talk that the US may join Israel in a powerful airstrike to destroy Iran’s underground nuclear facility at Fordo. The suspected weapon for the job: the GBU-57 "bunker buster" bomb, carried by the US military’s B-2 stealth bombers. This massive bomb can reach deep underground bunkers something only the US is equipped to do, as Israel doesn’t own such aircraft or bombs.
The GBU-57, also known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, is about 20 feet long and weighs over 13,000 kilograms. Experts believe more than one bomb may be needed to completely shut down the Fordo site and stop Iran from advancing its nuclear plans.
Trump’s decision to openly support Israel and possibly use US weapons in the attack has drawn sharp criticism from some of his usual allies. Supporters of the "America First" approach argue that this could drag the US into a conflict that has little to do with its own national interests.
Tucker Carlson, a well-known conservative commentator, expressed his concern during a podcast with Steve Bannon. He said getting involved in another war, especially when the US economy is already struggling, would be a major mistake.
Trump quickly responded online, saying, “Someone tell crazy Tucker Carlson that Iran must not get a nuclear weapon!”
Carlson and other critics argue that Iran’s nuclear threat is being overstated. They say there’s no solid proof Iran is close to building a bomb. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized Trump’s direction, saying that pushing the US into another foreign war goes against the MAGA (Make America Great Again) values.
She said, “Wanting war and the death of innocent people is wrong. We’re done with endless foreign wars. This one could spread fast across the Middle East, and even pull in BRICS nations and NATO allies.”
